The inspiration behind China Memory is rooted in the designers' deep interest in traditional Chinese culture, particularly ceramic art. The team aimed to create a restaurant that stands apart from the commercial or theme-less eateries often found in China. Their vision was to build a space that not only serves food but also educates guests about China's rich ceramic heritage.
China Memory is located in Shanghai but draws its cultural inspiration from Jingdezhen, a city renowned for its ceramic art for over a thousand years. The restaurant's unique properties lie in its successful incorporation of Jingdezhen's ceramic culture into its design. As guests dine, they are surrounded by ceramic art, allowing them to learn about and appreciate this traditional Chinese art form.
The restaurant, which spans over 1,000 square feet, features a variety of ceramic elements, including ceramic lamps and tables. The design team faced the challenge of integrating ceramic materials into the decor, a task that required numerous trials before achieving the desired results. The most notable feature is a ceramic kiln imitation, which doubles as a roast duck oven, adding a theatrical touch to the dining experience.
China Memory is more than just a restaurant; it's an interactive cultural experience. The design team's innovative approach to combining dining with cultural education has resulted in a unique space where guests can appreciate the beauty of ceramic art while enjoying their meal. The project, which began in June 2016 and was completed in October of the same year, has been a resounding success, earning the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017.
The designers' commitment to preserving and promoting traditional Chinese culture through innovative design is evident in every aspect of China Memory. This project serves as a testament to the power of design in bridging the gap between the past and the present, culture and commerce, art and everyday life. It's a shining example of how design can transform a simple dining experience into a journey through culture and history.
