Creating a Spacious Family Residence with a Unique V-Shaped Layout

Sanxia, an emerging district on the outskirts of Taipei City, has become a popular choice for young families seeking a place to call home. The Residence of All Purpose, designed by Chen-An Tang, caters to this demographic, providing a spacious and comfortable environment for a family with two children. The design inspiration came from the need for ample space for children, a requirement often overlooked in traditional residential designs.

What sets this design apart is its unique V-shaped layout. Unlike most designers who focus on the TV wall in the living room, Tang has placed the couch before the living room. The TV wall, painted in grey-blue, creates the effect of a traditional western fireplace. The open living room, dining room, and kitchen are ingeniously designed into an upside-down V shape, becoming the central part and visual concentration in the public area.

The interior of the residence is adorned with white walls and ceilings, wooden floors, and furniture, creating a simple yet comfortable atmosphere. A multi-purpose cabinet, which includes a shoe cabinet, showcase, storage cabinet, and bookcase, is installed from the entranceway. The door of the cabinet can also function as a board for children to draw on, adding a playful element to the design.

The residence spans 150 square meters, providing ample space for the family. The design project, completed in September 2015, was a testament to Tang's innovative approach to residential design. The designer removed a bedroom next to the living room to create a larger public area, drawing inspiration from the concept of a cloister to provide a roomy space for children.

The design faced several challenges, including maintaining a consistent style while implementing different mechanisms. However, Tang was able to create a space that was not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The residence offers lovely outdoor views, adding to its appeal.

In recognition of its innovative design, The Residence of All Purpose was awarded Silver in the A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, technical characteristics, artistic skill, and a remarkable level of excellence.
