Golden A' Design Award Winner Merges Nature and Architecture

Fumin Xu's design inspiration for the Returning Hut stemmed from the client's desire for a natural environment and a simple, unadorned life. The design philosophy was to 'weaken design,' essentially returning to a state of void, where the essence of space and materials is highlighted without excess decoration. The design's unique properties lie in its location - a wild hillside surrounded by mountains and forests, facing the sea. The hut is built at the foot of the mountain and beside the forest, integrating the natural rocks and trees into the design.

The interior design of the Returning Hut is simple, elegant, and natural, reflecting a deep respect for nature. The walls are primarily made of natural materials such as bluestone, slate, and solid wood. The use of simple lines and structures, along with natural furniture, creates a cozy and warm living space. The residence, with a total area of 390 sqm, is a perfect example of how design can coexist with nature.

The construction of the building presented several challenges due to the hillside location, special structures, and construction period. Despite these challenges, the completed hut successfully reflects the life attitude pursued by both the owner and the designer: a return to nature, humility, simplicity, and purity.

The Returning Hut was completed in 2015 in Fujian, China. It has been recognized for its unique design approach and was awarded the Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017.
