Reimagining Comfort: The Egg of Concrete

Industrial Materials Transformed into a Cozy, Contemporary Chair

In a bold reinterpretation of modernist design, designers Fatemeh Fooladi and Solmaz Primavera have created the Egg of Concrete, a chair that challenges perceptions of comfort and industrial materials.

The Egg of Concrete draws its inspiration from the iconic Egg Chair by Arne Jacobsen, a staple of modernist design. However, Fooladi and Primavera have added a contemporary twist, utilizing industrial materials to create a chair that doesn't offer an escape from the urban jungle, but rather embraces it. The designers have transformed concrete and rebar, materials often associated with cold, brutalist architecture, into a comfortable and cozy seating option.

Constructed with concrete, rusted rebar, and metal plates, the Egg of Concrete showcases the unique qualities of these industrial materials. The chair's neutral color also lends itself to versatility, making it a suitable addition to a wide variety of interior styles and design projects. The chair's dimensions are H: 1450 x W: 830 x D: 800 mm, and it weighs 35 kg.

The design process for the Egg of Concrete was a meticulous one. Like Jacobsen, who first sculpted the Egg Chair out of clay in his garage to perfect the shape, Fooladi and Primavera created their first Egg of Concrete by hand. The project took five months from concept to realization, beginning in January 2015 and culminating in March 2015 with the chair's presentation at the Design Living Tendency Exhibition in Kyiv, Ukraine.

Despite the unconventional materials used, the Egg of Concrete is incredibly ergonomic and comfortable. The designers faced the challenge of reducing the weight of a chair made from traditional normal-weight concrete. They overcame this by using a lightweight concrete mix and mounting the chair on casters to improve mobility.

The Egg of Concrete is not just a testament to innovative design, but also to the potential of industrial materials in everyday life. The chair was awarded Silver in the A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a testament to its remarkable design and innovation. The Egg of Concrete is a bold statement piece that challenges perceptions and transforms the ordinary into the extraordinary.
