Up-Side-Down Lamp: A Masterpiece of Simplicity and Versatility

Designer Sergios Fotiadis Creates a Multi-Positional Lamp with Sustainable Design

Introducing the Up-Side-Down lamp, a unique creation by designer Sergios Fotiadis. This versatile piece, made from two pieces of plywood and a light fixture, is a testament to the power of simplicity and sustainability in design.

The Up-Side-Down lamp draws its inspiration from the shape of the light bulb itself. Its assembly requires only its cable and lamp holder, making it a model of minimalist design. The lamp's unique properties lie in its ability to be positioned in three different ways: as a table lamp, a floor lamp, or hung from a ceiling with the addition of a simple hook. This versatility, coupled with its variety of colors, allows it to suit any space.

The lamp is made from plywood, cable, an E27 light fixture, and a LED filament lamp. Its dimensions are 190 mm x 190 mm x 340 mm, and it uses a 4-watt LED filament lamp (or a 40-watt Edison lamp). The lamp is designed for ambient lighting, providing a soft glow to any room it graces.

The design process for the Up-Side-Down lamp was both meticulous and mindful. One of the main goals was to ensure ease of manufacturing, using the fewest parts and tools possible. A CNC milling machine was used to cut the plywood, a laser engraver for the logo, and then the pieces were sanded and varnished. The project was designed and produced in Athens, Greece, in November-December 2016, and was exhibited in December in Athens.

The challenges in creating the Up-Side-Down lamp were met with innovative solutions. To make the lamp sustainable and keep costs low, the size of the wooden parts was calculated to fit as many as possible on the raw material. All the "corners" on the object were calculated depending on the drill bit used on the CNC. The cable used, covered with textile, was calculated based on its diameter, for its total length and for the final details of the wooden parts.

The Up-Side-Down lamp is a testament to the power of simplicity and sustainability in design. It is designed to produce ambient light with low energy consumption. By choosing the color of the cable, the Up-Side-Down can suit any space. It can be placed in different ways, on the floor, on the table, at the ceiling. It is designed and manufactured with concern to sustainability, since it only uses two pieces of wood, with a simple manufacturing process, and the cable with its fixture.

This innovative design has not gone unnoticed. The Up-Side-Down lamp was awarded Silver in the A' Lighting Products and Fixtures Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
