The inspiration for the Lighting Cup comes from the traditional Korean landscape painting called Soomook-sansuhwa. The designers have reinterpreted this art form in three dimensions, using the variation in thickness of the cup walls to create a stunning representation of a moonlit landscape. When illuminated, the delicate illustration on the cup comes to life, evoking a sense of meditative Asian sentiment.

What sets the Lighting Cup apart is its multifunctionality. It can be used as a teacup for everyday use, but it also transforms into an ornamental lighting cover when combined with the provided LED saucer. The light can be turned on and off with a touch sensor, and it is powered by a rechargeable battery that supports a Micro-USB connection. The LED saucer is embedded with dimming control, allowing for adjustable brightness levels. With a fully charged battery, the Lighting Cup can provide up to 8-10 hours of continuous LED lighting.

The design of the Lighting Cup posed several challenges. To ensure optimal light transmittance, the cup needed to have thinner walls than traditional ceramic cups. However, this presented difficulties during the manufacturing process, as the cup shape would often be distorted. Through extensive trial and error, the designers overcame these challenges and developed a manufacturing process that resulted in the desired thin-walled cup.
