The Dough: A Unique Galvanized Iron Sheet Shelf

Exploring the Relationship Between Material and Structure

The Dough is a one-of-a-kind shelf designed by Jie Luo, inspired by the versatility of galvanized iron sheet. This innovative piece of furniture challenges the stereotypes associated with the material, showcasing its flexibility and strength in a stunning design.

It all began with a chance encounter at a galvanized iron sheet shop. Despite being considered a cheap and low-class industry material, Luo was captivated by its potential and set out to incorporate it into furniture design. The result is The Dough, a shelf that pushes the boundaries of material exploration.

What sets The Dough apart is its unique adaptation of the flexibility and strength inherent in galvanized iron sheet. By combining this "soft" material with a "strong" wooden structure, Luo breaks through the traditional stereotypes associated with both materials. The result is a design that showcases the essential relationship between material and structure.

The process of creating The Dough involves hand-crafting the galvanized iron sheet into shape and using wood joints and glue to form the wooden structure. The shelf measures 1340 mm tall, 790 mm wide, and 310 mm deep, constructed using two layers of 0.5 mm thick galvanized iron sheet and 35 mm square wood.

Unlike traditional shelves, The Dough encourages users to arrange their books and belongings more randomly, adding an element of playfulness to its functionality. This unconventional approach to shelving adds a touch of uniqueness to any space.

The Dough project commenced in early November 2016 in Chengdu, China, and was completed in late November 2016 in Beijing, China. Throughout the design process, Luo conducted extensive research on the specifications and characteristics of galvanized iron sheet, working closely with the shop owner to understand its strengths, weaknesses, and unique features.

Overcoming various creative, technical, and research challenges, Luo successfully determined the folding method for the sheet, established the material specifications, and devised the order of the building process between the metal and wood components.

The Dough is a testament to the power of innovative design and material exploration. By reimagining the potential of galvanized iron sheet, Luo has created a shelf that not only defies expectations but also adds a touch of sophistication to any living space.
