Designer Tetsuya Matsumoto Transforms Dispensing Pharmacy with High-Tech Minimalism

Design inspiration often comes from unexpected places. For Tetsuya Matsumoto, the concept of healing, typically associated with peaceful nature, took a different turn. Matsumoto recognized that the trust patients place in medical institutions is rooted in the advancement of modern medicine. This realization led to the creation of The Cutting Edge, a dispensing pharmacy design that embodies the essence of advanced medical care technology through its sharp, high-tech impression.

The Cutting Edge stands out with its unique properties. The design, associated with a neighboring general hospital, employs a pure white minimalistic space with sharp surfaces and edges. This approach creates a high-tech impression on the users of the pharmacy, fitting the image of advanced medical care technology. The design is not only aesthetically pleasing but also functional, offering high-quality services in a simple and intuitive manner.

The realization of this design involved a metallic frame structure covered with metallic panels for the exterior walls and plaster-boards for the interior walls. The protracted part was covered in thin mat white metallic panels with a low-density foam core. The sharp edges were made using aluminum sheets. The interior wall behind the reception counter was covered by special wood panels, adding a sharper atmosphere to the inside. The glass used in the facade is a 19mm float glass.

The design process was not without its challenges. The neighboring hospital was in the process of renewing its image and improving its service. The pharmacy was a key part of this shift and needed to make an impressive impact despite its small size and budget. However, Matsumoto successfully designed a small, budget-friendly pharmacy building that is both impressive and functional.

The Cutting Edge is a testament to Tetsuya Matsumoto's innovative approach to design. It has been recognized with a Golden A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017, a prestigious accolade granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. This design is indeed a marvelous, trendsetting creation that advances art, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with its desirable characteristics.
