Alpine Restaurant Schmiedhof Alm: A Blend of Tradition and Innovation

ARSP Architekten Rüf Stasi Partner Transforms Alpine Dining with Award-Winning Design

ARSP Architekten Rüf Stasi Partner has redefined alpine dining with their innovative design of the Alpine Restaurant Schmiedhof Alm. This article explores the unique features, challenges, and inspirations behind this award-winning project.

The Alpine Restaurant Schmiedhof Alm, nestled in the exclusive Zell am See Ski region of Austria, stands as a testament to the power of innovative design. The restaurant, which was completely renovated by ARSP Architekten Rüf Stasi Partner, offers a stark contrast to the mass-produced facilities commonly found in ski resorts. Instead, it provides an inviting atmosphere that encourages skiers and diners to linger and enjoy their time.

The design of the restaurant is a blend of traditional and contemporary architecture. The traditional ski hut with a pitched roof in timber acts as a guest room, while an inserted concrete cube with a flat roof houses the canteen. The structure of the ski hut consists of visual standard KLH solid wood panels on the interior and the internally insulated exposed concrete walls of the monolith. The roof structure of the guest area is highly insulated and finished in wood, with visible rafters enhancing the form of the open area.

One of the unique features of the design is the large, highly insulated windows. These windows not only create spatially effective elements but also provide additional seating niches. The bay windows thrust out from the façade, offering spectacular views of the surrounding mountains. The seating is made of high-quality KLH panels mounted on brackets and covered with felt.

The restaurant can support up to 200 skiers at once, both in the elongated timber structure and the outdoor terraced area. The column-free guest area provides an open feel, with easy access to all areas. Window seats and careful partitions enhance the homely feeling, encouraging guests to take their time and enjoy the views.

The design of the Alpine Restaurant Schmiedhof Alm was not without its challenges. The architects had to design a building that would naturally integrate into the high mountain area. They also had to develop a design and construction that could be realized within a few months in summer due to the very limited construction period possible in the alpine region.

Despite these challenges, the design was a success. In 2017, it was awarded Silver in the A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The Alpine Restaurant Schmiedhof Alm is a perfect example of such a design.
