Ali Qapu Palace: A Wearable Architecture Collection

Somayeh Kianpour Transforms Persian Architecture into Unique Jewelry

Ali Qapu Palace, a grand architectural marvel in Isfahan, Iran, has been transformed into a unique jewelry collection by designer Somayeh Kianpour. The collection, which includes a necklace and earrings, is a testament to the rich cultural heritage of Persian architecture.

The inspiration behind this collection is the Ali Qapu Palace itself, a 17th-century Safavid mansion that stands as a symbol of Iranian architectural prowess. The palace, known for its intricate stucco embellishments and acoustic artworks, was the site of the first Nowruz, the Iranian New Year celebration, under King Abbass.

What sets this collection apart is its ability to encapsulate the essence of the palace's architectural and decorative features. The deep circular niches decoration on the 6th floor of the palace was chosen as the motif for the collection, symbolizing both embellishment and functional desire, a remarkable feat for the early 17th century.

The jewelry pieces are designed using Matrix, made from gold, and weigh about 5.5 grams for the necklace and 4.00 grams for the earrings. The pieces are adorned with blue turquoise, nacre, and agate, adding to their exclusivity and uniqueness. The simplicity of the design makes the pieces easy to use daily, while their rich cultural background provides a deeper understanding of Persian cultural achievements.

The design process was not without its challenges. Transforming an urban scale structure into a jewelry function and scale required a commitment to the original artwork and a consideration for the industrial production potential. Despite these challenges, the collection has been well-received, with the audience appreciating the hidden ideas and new concepts in daily use.

The Wearable Architecture collection was awarded Silver in A' Jewelry, Eyewear, and Watch Design Award in 2017. The award is a testament to the collection's outstanding expertise and innovation, strong technical characteristics, and splendid artistic skill. In essence, the collection is not just jewelry, but opportunities to appreciate and interact with Persian architecture in a unique way.
