Manta Chair: A Bionic Design for Comfortable Leisure

Bringing the Beauty of Nature to Modern Furniture

The Manta Chair, designed by Wei Jingye, Chang Zhun, and Ning Yingying, draws inspiration from the elegant form of the skate, capturing the beauty of nature and infusing it into a comfortable and stylish leisure armchair. With its bionic design and use of lightweight materials, the Manta Chair offers a unique and functional seating experience.

The Manta Chair stands out from other armchair designs with its innovative bionic shape. The front legs, handrails, and hind leg of the chair are meticulously crafted to resemble the mouth, pectoral fins, and caudal fins of a skate. This attention to detail creates a sleek and streamlined appearance, while maintaining the chair's functionality.

To ensure both comfort and durability, the Manta Chair features an aluminum alloy frame. The frame is produced using advanced CNC milling or die casting technology, resulting in a lightweight yet sturdy structure. The seat surface and backrest are made from strip leather, carefully cut and woven to provide elasticity and moderate support.

One of the design challenges faced by the team was finding the perfect balance between the skate-inspired form and the functionality of the armchair. By combining ergonomic principles with the unique shape of the skate, they were able to create a chair that not only looks visually striking but also provides a comfortable seating experience.

During the design process, the tensile strength of the strip leather used for the seat surface and backrest, as well as the connection to the aluminum alloy frame, were key considerations. The team overcame these challenges through meticulous research and testing, ensuring that the Manta Chair is both visually appealing and structurally sound.

The Manta Chair measures 800mm x 700mm x 850mm and was first conceived in January 2015 in Shenyang. It was completed in June of the same year and showcased at the museum of Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in July. The chair's vibrant shape, simple material composition, and concise structure make it a standout piece of modern furniture.

The Manta Chair received the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in 2017, recognizing its outstanding design and contribution to improving quality of life. This award-winning armchair exemplifies the fusion of art, science, design, and technology, creating a comfortable and visually captivating piece that enhances any living space.

With the Manta Chair, Wei Jingye, Chang Zhun, and Ning Yingying have successfully brought the beauty of nature and the principles of bionic design to the world of furniture. This innovative armchair is a testament to their creativity, technical expertise, and commitment to creating functional and aesthetically pleasing designs.
