Espresso Stool: A Perfect Blend of Form and Function

A Unique Stool Inspired by the Daily Ritual of Coffee Making

Espresso Stool is a conceptually and functionally well-balanced design created by Dongjoo Jung. Inspired by the daily ritual of making coffee, this stool captures a moment of simplicity and transforms it into a piece of art.

Espresso Stool stands out from other designs with its unique shape and harmonious combination of softness and rigidity. The stool takes its form from coffee beans, creating a visually appealing and organic silhouette. To achieve the perfect balance between comfort and stability, a linear felt band is added to the middle of the seat, providing both softness and support.

The design process for Espresso Stool involved several stages, starting with sketches and ideation. Using 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks and Rhino, the designer brought the concept to life. Renderings were created using Key Shot to visualize the final product. For production, the seat is milled using a CNC Router, while the legs are turned in a lathe. Every part is meticulously assembled using wood glue.

With dimensions of 14 inches in width, 11 inches in depth, and 16.5 inches in height, Espresso Stool is a compact and versatile piece of furniture. Its sleek and modern design makes it a perfect fit for any contemporary space.

Espresso Stool goes beyond being just a functional piece of furniture. It represents a harmonious blend of ergonomics and aesthetics. While stools have often been limited in terms of both comfort and visual appeal, this design breaks the mold. It provides a comfortable seating experience while adding a touch of elegance to any environment.

The development of Espresso Stool involved extensive research and experimentation. The designer explored various materials, focusing on combining rigidity and softness. Ergonomic considerations were also taken into account, ensuring that the stool provides optimal support for different body positions and structures.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was maintaining simplicity and functionality simultaneously. The designer conducted numerous experiments with different soft materials, such as liquids, foams, leathers, fabrics, and felts, to achieve the perfect balance. The result is a stool that is not only visually appealing but also practical and comfortable.

Espresso Stool is a reminder of the significance of the ordinary moments in our daily lives. Inspired by the simple act of making coffee, it encourages us to appreciate the beauty in the mundane. Dongjoo Jung's creation is a testament to the power of design to elevate the everyday.

Espresso Stool has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017 in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. Espresso Stool's integration of industry best practices and its ability to evoke positive emotions make it a true winner.
