The Trio revolutionized the way teams share ideas by enabling every team member to clearly collaborate and communicate. The Trio goes beyond the simple aspirations of making a better conference phone. It is layered with technologies to help drive these additional experiences, such as controlling a video call, sharing presentations, connecting numerous devices and services, and controlling the rooms lighting and temperature. Through the Android interface, additional Apps can be added to insure that the Trio meets the needs of meetings both today and tomorrow.

Simple and intuitive usability of the conference phone is critical. Many user scenarios were developed to create a design criteria. One scenario for example, was a first time user running into a meeting room just two minutes before a call and being able to initiate the meeting with complete ease. This resulted in substantial work on the UI. Another scenario was the ability for anyone within the room to mute a call quickly. This resulted in mute buttons being places in easy reach spots on the end of each leg, with LEDs that clearly displays the device's status.

The design development was a collaboration between specialist teams in Los Angeles California, San Jose California, Austin Texas, and Andover Massachusetts. The way people in business think, interact and work, requires constant innovation to stay competitive. Polycom set up a secret research unit to consider this area. The Real Presence Trio is one of a new range of products reinventing this space. Research dictated that nothing can replace face-to-face communication, and body language. This core aspect of communication led to the development of a 1080p30 USB camera that provides business-grade video and creates the equivalent of real-time connection that is critical for effective collaboration and closure.
