Chongqing Wanda Velodrome: A Blend of Tradition and Modernity

Wanda CPRI & GDAD's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Chinese Lanterns

Chongqing Wanda Velodrome, a masterpiece by Wanda CPRI & GDAD, is a unique blend of traditional Chinese elements and modern architecture. Inspired by Chinese lanterns, this state-of-the-art sports facility is set to become a landmark in Chongqing, China.

The design of the Velodrome draws its inspiration from the old Chinese handicraft of lantern-making. During the Lantern Festival, people hang up red lanterns to celebrate family reunion and create a festive atmosphere. The outer material of the Velodrome is PC, and its saddle-like form is a response to the necessity of the cycling track. The skin of the structure changes colour according to the game, creating a sense of lightness that resembles a cloud. The soft colour of the outer walls eliminates the spatial pressure of the architecture on its surroundings.

As one of the most important sports facilities in Chongqing, the Velodrome is designed to accommodate up to 6,000 spectators. The indoor wooden cycling track measures 250 metres in length, meeting the highest standards of UCI competitions. The design team aimed to create a modern structure that also embodies traditional Chinese features, making it a unique landmark in the city.

The Velodrome is constructed using a light cable net structure, which eliminates the need for large lifting equipment during the construction of the roof. Covering a total area of 32,000 square metres, the Velodrome features three floors above the ground and a dome that reaches 150 metres in length and 120 metres in width. The cycling track has a total length of 250 metres, with a slope angle ranging from 13 to 45 degrees, requiring high precision in construction.

The design of the Velodrome was based on a thorough study of built Velodrome precedents worldwide, as well as a deep understanding of the requirements of all categories of relevant games. The design also took into account the local natural environment and cultural geography of the region, incorporating elements of local culture and traditions into the creation of modern architecture. Furthermore, the design also considered sustainable tactics as a response to the idea of being environmentally friendly and energy saving.

The Velodrome was awarded Silver in A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
