The swimming pool/terrace addition is located in the hidden back courtyard of the existing historic building. Despite being underground on the basement level, it is completely open to the narrow garden beside it. The metal frames, custom-made from stainless steel, are fully glazed with different types of glass panels, varying in opacity, color, and reflection. This creates a rhythm in the structure and allows for an abundance of natural light to flood the space.
The translucent surface of the building, almost invisible during the day, comes alive at night with mesmerizing water reflections. The linear internal space is defined by the stone masonry of the classic base and the interplay of light and shadows between the metal structures. The black stone cladding not only marks the excavation but also integrates the heating system, ensuring comfort throughout the year.
The design also features a roof terrace, accessible from both the garden and the house. This elevated space offers panoramic views of the surroundings and serves as an extension of the living area. Special printing on the glass provides friction when walking, ensuring safety without compromising the aesthetic appeal.
The swimming pool measures 16 x 4.2 x 1.5 meters and is prefabricated from stainless steel. The entire structure spans 20 meters in length, 5.4 meters in width, and stands 2.8 meters tall above the water level. The attention to detail and the innovative glazing attachment detail, with a hidden metal strip holding the glass panels together, showcase the meticulous craftsmanship and technical expertise of the design team.
Completed in December 2012, this remarkable addition to the historic building in Sofia, Bulgaria, has garnered recognition and acclaim. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2014, a prestigious accolade that celebrates outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The swimming pool/terrace addition by I/O architects exemplifies excellence in architecture, creating a space that seamlessly blends with its surroundings and offers a unique and tranquil experience for its users.
