Crematorium: A Modern Mortuary Hub in an Urban Park

A Unique Design by Mauro Crepaldi - Patrimonio Copparo Srl

The new Mortuary Hub lies inside an urban park area, owned by the Municipality. It is extended from the border of the historical centre up to the cemetery and it is inspired by the great parks of Northern Europe. A living place, a green ground dedicated to the community in which reading, resting, meditating, although in strict contact with the Cremation Centre and the cemetery.

The Crematorium, designed by Mauro Crepaldi - Patrimonio Copparo Srl, is a remarkable architectural project that seamlessly blends into its surroundings. Located in front of the Copparo historic Cemetery, this Mortuary Hub aims to transform the area into a park designed in Northern European fashion, providing a peaceful and contemplative space for the community.

One of the key features of this design is the integration of the main services of the Cemetery within the building. Visitors are welcomed into an entrance hall, leading to a Farewell Chamber where families can gather for the final ceremony. An internal court-garden provides a serene environment for reflection. Administrative offices and the Crematorium area, which houses all the production facilities and management offices, are also discreetly incorporated into the design.

The building itself is a minimalist masterpiece, constructed using three main materials: concrete, glass, and a facade of grey slabs. A long concrete wall serves as the border of the park, with offices and entrances facing towards the Historical Cemetery. Suspended on this wall is a rectangular box covered with grey stoneware slabs, which cleverly conceals the filter systems and technical chimneys.

The Crematorium is designed to be both functional and respectful. It features two main entrances, allowing visitors to access the Farewell Hall through a tree-lined street that connects the city center to the cemetery. Workers, on the other hand, have a private access at the back of the building. The use of a green dune and heavy concrete walls effectively hides the Crematorium area, ensuring that it does not disrupt the tranquility of the park.

Mauro Crepaldi - Patrimonio Copparo Srl faced several challenges while designing this project. The goal was to insert a crematorium into a city park without compromising the sensitivity of park-goers. The team successfully achieved this by carefully concealing the main functions and masking the production facilities and technical chimneys. The result is a building that harmoniously blends into its surroundings and serves as a catalyst for urban transformation.

The Crematorium's design is a testament to the power of simplicity and functionality. Its neutral and minimalist form, devoid of any religious symbolism, allows it to seamlessly interact with the historic cemetery. This architectural gem not only fulfills its purpose as a Mortuary Hub but also contributes to the revitalization of the city and its park.

Recognized for its excellence, the Crematorium was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2016. This prestigious accolade is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards. The Crematorium's integration of industry best practices and its positive impact on the community make it a deserving recipient of this esteemed award.
