Shade: A Harmonious Blend of Sky and Living Space

Satoshi Fujinaka's Ingenious Residential Design in Japan

In the heart of a dense Japanese housing complex, Satoshi Fujinaka's architectural masterpiece, Shade, emerges as a sanctuary that harmonizes the built environment with the natural sky, offering a unique living experience.

Confronted with the challenge of privacy due to the proximity of neighboring houses, Fujinaka cleverly elevated the site to harness the natural elements. The ascent from the road to the site reveals a refreshing breeze and an expansive sky, which became the cornerstone of Fujinaka's inspiration. This elevation in perspective allowed for the integration of the sky into the daily lives of the residents, enhancing their connection with the natural world.

Shade distinguishes itself through its strategic use of structure and space. By erecting walls of varying heights along the property's edge, Fujinaka not only shielded the inhabitants from external pressures but also crafted a roof under which life unfolds. The design's clever spatial arrangement, with the dining area set lower and the living room higher, creates a natural flow that draws the gaze upwards to the sky, framed by the roofs.

The realization of Shade was a testament to architectural ingenuity, blending traditional Japanese wood construction with modern techniques. The building's partial subterranean level, made possible by the site's elevation, allowed for a lower overall height, adhering to local restrictions while maximizing the visibility of the sky. The structural grid, based on a conventional 910mm x 910mm pillar and beam pitch, simplified the construction process and facilitated cost-effective management.

Shade's interaction with its environment extends beyond its physical form. The design addresses the challenge of coexisting with a densely built neighborhood while fostering a connection to nature. It also responds to the increasing environmental pressures of climate change, enhancing the building's comfort and reducing its ecological footprint through strategic window placement and material selection.

The project's timeline spanned from April 2018 to December 2019, with the design and construction taking place in Iwakuni, Japan. The research behind Shade was twofold: maximizing the natural environment within a confined space and managing costs effectively. These challenges were met with innovative solutions, including client participation in construction and meticulous material cost analysis.

Shade is a reflection of Fujinaka's philosophy to embrace the transient yet profound beauty of nature. By adjusting the mass and brightness of the living spaces, the design encourages inhabitants to continually rediscover the sky. This architectural approach has not only provided a functional living space but also an ever-present canvas of natural splendor.

Shade's excellence in design has been recognized with a Bronze A' Design Award in Architecture, Building and Structure Design for the year 2024. This prestigious accolade celebrates Fujinaka's ability to merge art, science, design, and technology into a living space that elevates the quality of life and contributes positively to the world.
