Florian W Mueller's "House of Escher": A Surrealistic Architectural Masterpiece

Winner of the Silver A' Design Award, this fine art photography project challenges perception and reality.

Florian W Mueller, a renowned photographer and artist, has created a unique masterpiece titled "House of Escher". This project, inspired by the surrealistic drawings of MC Escher, transforms an ordinary university staircase into a mind-bending work of art. The project, which won the Silver A' Design Award in 2017, is a testament to Mueller's ability to find the unusual in the ordinary and create thought-provoking images.

The "House of Escher" is located in the "Service Center for Students" at the University of Cologne, Germany. The building, designed by Schuster Architects, features a minimal and beautiful staircase that Mueller has captured from unique angles. The result is a series of images that prompt viewers to question what they are seeing and where it is located.

Mueller's work is characterized by his search for the right angles to create pictures that evoke thoughts, associations, emotions, and memories. His images reach into and below the surface of customary patterns of conception, offering a fresh perspective on reality. The "House of Escher" is a perfect example of this approach, with its abstract and surrealistic look.

The project started in autumn 2015, with the photographs taken in November. Mueller conducted extensive research on the work of MC Escher to create the abstract and surrealistic look. He also had to request permission to take pictures in the building, which he did in the evening to avoid disturbing anyone and to capture a clear and empty staircase.

The "House of Escher" is available in fine art photography paper, either framed or mounted behind matte plexiglass. The prints are available in three sizes: 30 x 30cm (limited to 50 pieces), 80 x 80cm (limited to 10 pieces), and 120 x 120cm (limited to 5 pieces).

The project has been widely acclaimed, with the architects and the dean of the university expressing amazement at the final pictures. The "House of Escher" was awarded Silver in the A' Photography and Photo Manipulation Design Award in 2017, a prestigious award given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.

In conclusion, Florian W Mueller's "House of Escher" is a stunning example of how art and architecture can intersect to create something truly unique. By challenging our perceptions of reality, Mueller invites us to see the world in a new light and to appreciate the beauty in the ordinary. His work serves as a reminder of the power of creativity and the endless possibilities that exist when we dare to look at things from a different angle.
