Architecture for Children

An Education Program by Vicky Chan

Our children inspire us to look at the built environment in the most innocent way. Our volunteers inspire our children to be good architects, while our children inspire our volunteers to become better architects.

We see a lot of environmental problems to be the result of current politics. We believe our future will be brighter when our children are more equipped with sustainable, collaborative, and creative thinking. By teaching children about architecture, sustainable design, urban planning, and efficient use of materials, they will get into the habit of thinking in those terms. We hope to change the world through volunteering and education.

Started in September 2003, Architecture for Children is an education program led by Vicky Chan and a team of dedicated individuals including Peggy Feagin, Maya Carter, David Benham, Da Ye Kwon, Wijdene Kaabi, Horus Wan, Peter Van Hage, Belle Tang, and Taylor Carter. Over the last 14 years, they have been teaching at local schools in Hong Kong and New York, inspiring children to become architects and fostering their understanding of sustainable design and urban planning.

The program focuses on teaching children about green buildings and green cities, with the aim of creating a future generation that thinks critically about the environment and is equipped with the knowledge and skills to address sustainability challenges. Through research, design, and presentation phases, children are encouraged to come up with their unique solutions to problems in cities and buildings.

One of the challenges faced by the program is keeping children engaged and focused on specific subjects. To overcome this, the syllabus is designed to be short and interesting, striking a balance between fun and education.

Architecture for Children has received recognition for its innovative approach and impact. In 2017, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the category of Public Awareness, Volunteerism, and Society Design. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The program is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.

Through Architecture for Children, Vicky Chan and his team are shaping the minds of future architects and designers, instilling in them a sense of responsibility towards the environment and the power to create positive change.
