Shelf Lamp: Combining Functionality and Flexibility

A Multifunctional Lamp Designed by Jiawen Lian

Shelf Lamp draws inspiration from the scalability and detachability of camera tripods and easels. By incorporating these properties, the lamp offers enhanced flexibility in its usage. The legs of the lamp can be folded, disassembled, and easily assembled, allowing users to adjust the height according to their specific needs.

One of the main strengths of Shelf Lamp is its easy storage and transport capabilities. The cuboid form of the main structure, as opposed to a columniform design, ensures convenient storage and transportation. Additionally, the angle formed by the lines of the lamp adds a decorative touch to its overall aesthetic.

The lamp is made primarily from beech, a commonly used material in Chinese furniture production. Beech is known for its durability, strength, and affordability, making it an ideal choice for this design. The light part of the lamp utilizes LED strips, which are both effective and cost-efficient.

Shelf Lamp comes in three different forms, each serving a specific purpose. The triangular-shaped lamp functions as a floor lamp, while the swing-shaped lamp can be used as a table lamp or bedside lamp. The lamp itself can also be placed on the ground as a side bracket. This versatility allows users to adapt the lamp to various scenarios and preferences.

Throughout the design process, Jiawen Lian conducted extensive research on the demands, behaviors, desires, and new values of young people living in crowded spaces. By incorporating user-centered design principles, the lamp not only fulfills functional requirements but also considers the aesthetic preferences of design and art students.

The development of Shelf Lamp was not without its challenges. From the ideation stage, Jiawen faced the task of maintaining a balance between functionality and aesthetics. The inspiration from camera tripods and easels provided a solid foundation, but adjustments were necessary to ensure the lamp's stability. The final design includes cylinder-shaped rubber components to keep the lamp balanced.

Shelf Lamp was created as an individual graduation project by Jiawen Lian in Milan. The project started in September 2014 and was completed in July 2015. The lamp has garnered recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2018. This prestigious award acknowledges the lamp's well-designed, practical, and innovative features that meet professional and industrial requirements.

With its combination of functionality, flexibility, and aesthetic appeal, Shelf Lamp offers a unique solution for individuals living in rental housing estates. It not only enhances the reading environment but also adds a touch of style to any space.
