Lin's inspiration for "To You" stems from a desire to acknowledge the unsung heroes of creation - the 'nobodies' who contribute significantly to the completion of a masterpiece, yet often go unnoticed. This concept is beautifully portrayed in her design, where she uses common electronic components, often overlooked for their value, and transforms them into a piece of jewelry, akin to a precious gem.
The design process involved meticulous soldering of electronic components, cutting, folding, soldering, and polishing sterling silver, and setting the electronic components as if they were diamonds. The result is a unique piece that not only challenges conventional notions of value and beauty but also serves as a tribute to the unnoticed efforts that contribute to the creation of something extraordinary.
"To You" is not just a ring; it's an interactive piece that allows the wearer to customize their style. The upper part, made up of electronic components, can be pulled up to replace different components, much like LEGO. This interactive feature adds a playful element to the design, making it not just a piece of jewelry, but an experience.
The project was initiated in November 2007 in Taipei and completed in January 2008 in New Taipei. It was later exhibited at the Gold Museum in March 2010. Despite initial self-doubts and challenges in combining the electronic components in a way that elevated their perceived value, Lin's dedication and creativity led to the successful realization of this innovative design.
In recognition of its originality and creativity, "To You" was awarded Silver in A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award in 2018. This prestigious accolade is awarded to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, and "To You" certainly fits the bill. With this design, Tsang-Hsuan Lin has truly redefined the value of the unnoticed, reminding us all that a chain is only as strong as its weakest link.
