Uod: A Smart Chandelier that Adapts to Your Needs

Introducing Uod: The Innovative Chandelier

Uod is a revolutionary chandelier designed by Andrea Cingoli and Umberto La Sorda. Inspired by the movement of artificial satellites, Uod features adjustable photovoltaic panels that emit artificial light instead of intercepting natural light. This smart lamp is capable of adapting to the user's preferences and environmental context, making it a truly unique lighting solution.

Uod stands out from other chandeliers with its smart capabilities. It has the ability to detect the user and understand their specific functional circumstances and environmental context. Based on this information, Uod proposes the most comfortable and ideal lighting solution, without compromising on energy consumption. While Uod is anchored to the ceiling, it can transform into a table lamp for reading or working, aligning its illuminated surfaces parallel to the working surface to enhance visual comfort.

The manufacturing process of Uod involves the use of brushed aluminum, steel, OLED panels, and electronics. Through a system of mobile stems, the extremely light OLED panels can be bent to direct the light towards the working area. An electrical box coordinates the entire system and connects the chandelier to mobile devices.

With dimensions of W 1100mm x D 1100mm x H 500 mm, Uod boasts a unique design that combines comfort and energy efficiency. The chandelier's open diameter measures 1100 mm, while the closed diameter is only 200 mm. The height of the chandelier is 500 mm. In addition to the comfort provided by OLED lighting, Uod also offers significant energy savings. By utilizing the transformation system, Uod minimizes the energy required for lighting, adjusting the position of the panels to optimize visual comfort on the working surface.

Uod's interaction with users is facilitated through Bluetooth connectivity with their mobile devices. The chandelier receives input from the smartphone, which acts as a tool to control the light intensity on the table during work. The OLED panels adjust their orientation based on the smartphone's feedback, ensuring the optimal lighting conditions for the desired task. The accompanying app allows users to manually regulate the light power and configure the chandelier's shape.

The Uod design project was initiated in March 2016 and completed in November 2016 in Teramo. Extensive research was conducted to create a functional tool that combines innovation and familiarity. By decontextualizing familiar forms and giving them new meaning, Uod aims to enhance our lives through its innovative design.

Overcoming the challenge of creating a smart and sensitive object required more than just technological advancements. The designers aimed to transform an ordinary object into something extraordinary, with a user-friendly interface and a unique design concept. Uod represents a new generation of clever objects that not only incorporate high technology but also prioritize user experience and aesthetics.

Uod has been recognized for its exceptional design with the Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2018. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
