Gorenjska: A Reinterpretation of Traditional Wooden Chest

A Contemporary Design Inspired by Ethnographic Elements

Gorenjska, a wooden chest designed by Eva Strukelj and Ignacio Lopez Sola, is a modern take on the traditional fully-painted chests that were once prominent pieces of furniture in the Gorenjska region of Slovenia. This unique design incorporates ethnographic elements such as hearts and carnation flowers, which are characteristic of the region's cultural heritage.

A wooden chest holds a special place in the home, symbolizing warmth, family, and eternal values. Gorenjska draws inspiration from the region's rich tradition of painted wooden chests, which were used to store precious belongings. The designers, Eva Strukelj and Ignacio Lopez Sola, wanted to revive this tradition in a contemporary way, creating a piece of furniture that would become an important family heirloom.

The chest is made of cherry wood, a material that is not only visually appealing but also ideal for woodcarving. The hexagonal composition of the pattern on the chest's surface is concise on the top and gradually diminishes in size, eventually disappearing. This gradual fading represents the passage of time and the erasure of memories.

The pattern on the chest is machine-cut, but the finishing touches require meticulous hand-brushing and oiling, just as it was done centuries ago. The attention to detail is evident in the walnut inserts and "walnut butterflies" used to keep the pieces together, which can be seen in the interior of the chest.

Gorenjska is not just a piece of furniture; it is a work of art that brings emotional value to the home. The heart motif, a universal symbol of well-being, evokes feelings of warmth and family. The use of ethnographic elements and the choice of materials ensure that this chest will stand the test of time, becoming a cherished possession for generations to come.

The Gorenjska project started in November 2016 in the designers' atelier in Kranj, Slovenia, and was completed in April 2017. It will be exhibited at the Month of Design in Ljubljana, Slovenia, this October.

Gorenjska has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate innovation, practicality, and adherence to professional and industrial standards.

With Gorenjska, Eva Strukelj and Ignacio Lopez Sola have successfully reinterpreted a traditional piece of furniture, infusing it with contemporary design elements and paying homage to the region's cultural heritage. This chest not only serves a functional purpose but also adds a touch of artistry and history to any home.
