Innovative Tyre Design by Gao Fenglin Wins Prestigious A' Design Award

The Two-ply Tyre was inspired by the observation that the width of a spare tyre is equivalent to two-thirds of a regular tyre. This led Gao Fenglin to reimagine the tyre as two separate parts, ensuring that if one part fails, the other can still function. The result is a tyre with two cavities, a design that increases safety and reduces the risk of total tyre deflation.

What sets this design apart is its unique property of having two cavities. If a sharp object punctures the tyre, only one cavity leaks while the other remains intact. This prevents the tyre from completely deflating, allowing the car to continue running safely for a time without suddenly changing direction.

The realization of this design involved changing the original trachea into a bifurcation trachea, while still using rubber as the basic material. The biggest challenge faced during the design process was figuring out how to inflate the two cavities and maintain their relative independence.

Prototypes were created to verify the principle of inflation, and the resulting design not only enhances road safety but also helps to avoid traffic chaos. This innovative approach to tyre design is a testament to Gao Fenglin's commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and technology.

The Two-ply Tyre's innovative design and contribution to road safety were recognized with the Silver A' Vehicle, Mobility and Transportation Design Award in 2018.
