Hop On: A Self-Driven Electric Mobility Vehicle for Pedestrian Streets

Improving Urban Living and Shopping Experience

Living in Andorra City Center (Europe) and voluntarily do not want to own a car for my shopping needs. I walk to do all my shopping on a pedestrian shopping street as it is better for my health and the environment. One day with a foot problem I imagined this solution that could help so many people such as older people, families with children… Helps revitalizing city center shopping and dining out pedestrian streets, as more and more people live in cities. Also improves tourist’s experience.

The Hop On, designed by Marc Samson, is a modern and innovative solution to help people navigate pedestrian streets and enhance their shopping experience. Inspired by the designer's own experience of walking to do his shopping in Andorra City Center, this self-driven electric mobility vehicle aims to make urban living easier and more enjoyable for everyone.

Unlike traditional trams or vehicles, the Hop On is designed to be less invasive of the pedestrian space. It is a zero-emission platform on wheels that users can step on and off as they wish. The vehicle moves slowly, allowing users to take in the sights and explore the shops along the way. It is especially helpful for individuals with difficulty walking or those carrying heavy bags.

The Hop On measures only 2.4 meters long and 1.2 meters wide, making it small enough to navigate through crowded pedestrian streets without causing disruptions. The platform can accommodate up to four seated persons, a wheelchair, and an additional two to four standing persons. With a height of only 40mm from the street level, it is easily accessible for all users.

The device is self-driven and follows a track embedded in the street. Users can start and stop the vehicle by pressing the corresponding buttons. If there is an object in front, the Hop On automatically stops and alerts the user to remove the obstruction. Multiple devices on the same track are connected and maintain a safe distance from each other.

The Hop On is made using a combination of roto-moulded plastic for the main body parts, metallic parts, an electric motor, and a solar panel. The track is made of prefabricated modules that are linked together and set at street level. This design allows for easy installation and maintenance.

The Hop On has the potential to transform urban living and revitalize city center shopping streets. By providing a convenient and accessible mode of transportation, it improves the overall shopping experience for residents and tourists alike. With the growing aging and overweight population, this innovative mobility solution fulfills a market need and promotes a healthier and more sustainable lifestyle.

The Hop On design was presented in late 2017 to the President of a leading infrastructure organization in Andorra and is currently under consideration. The project has garnered recognition and was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 for its well-designed, practical, and innovative features. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that meet professional and industrial requirements, contributing to a better world.

Experience the magic of the Hop On, a self-driven electric mobility vehicle that brings convenience and joy to urban living and shopping on pedestrian streets.
