Mi-30: A Transmutation of Form and Light

Transforming 2D Geometry into Organic 3D Enclosures

Designed by Raza Zahid

The Mi-30 table lamp, designed by Raza Zahid, is a stunning example of how nature's textures, geometries, and forms can inspire innovative design. Zahid's intention was to create a lamp that transcends traditional boundaries, merging the distinction between silhouette and body, and transforming 2D planar geometry into 3-dimensional space.

What sets the Mi-30 apart is its unique layering system of the skin, which plays with a range of light and shadows, creating an enclosure that implies organic growth. The lamp's design hints at fluidity and movement, capturing the essence of nature's beauty.

The lamp's form is achieved through a labor-intensive process that combines 3D CAD software and parametric design. The structural skeleton is assembled first, followed by the skin consisting of 30 fins of varying profiles. The result is a visually captivating lamp that can be viewed from 360 degrees, presenting a different profile and intensity of light from each angle.

With a height of 760 mm (including the steel tripod) and a diameter of 455 mm, the Mi-30 is a decorative light that adds a touch of elegance to any space. The structural frame of the shade is made from 5 mm and 3 mm clear acrylic, while the fins are made of 3 mm translucent white acrylic. The tripod is constructed from white powder-coated steel, providing stability and durability.

Zahid's research into complex geometry and material attributes, as well as his exploration of construction and production techniques, culminated in the creation of the Mi-30. The lamp was designed and produced in Lahore, Pakistan, with the design phase taking place in August 2016 and the prototype developed in September 2016.

Overcoming the challenges of limited resources, Zahid focused on developing joinery and production details that would be easy to manufacture and assemble. Multiple prototypes were created to fine-tune various aspects of the lamp, ensuring its structural stability and the development of the best joinery mechanisms.

The Mi-30 has received recognition for its exceptional design. In 2018, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Mi-30's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

The Mi-30 table lamp is a testament to Raza Zahid's creativity and dedication to pushing the boundaries of design. Its unique form, inspired by nature, and its interplay of light and shadows make it a captivating addition to any space.
