Thetis: A Fusion of Nature and Technology in Jewellery Design

Meng Zhang's Award-Winning Bracelet Inspired by Oceanic Beauty

In the realm of jewellery design, Meng Zhang's Thetis bracelet stands as a testament to the harmonious fusion of nature's beauty and modern technology. Inspired by the fluid movements of oceanic creatures, this unique piece of jewellery brings the intangible to life through the use of 3D printing technology.

Meng Zhang's Thetis bracelet is more than just an accessory; it is a celebration of the magnificent nature. The design captures and abstracts the forms and movements of fish tails, translating them into a tangible form that enhances the body. Worn over clothing, the bracelet creates subtle yet sensual lines, making it a vibrant piece of evening jewellery.

The uniqueness of Thetis lies in its ability to transfer the intangible movement of nature's creatures into a tangible form. This transformation is achieved through the use of cutting-edge 3D printing technology, which allows for the creation of intricate and organic designs. The bracelet is first 3D printed, then cast into silver and assembled with great craftsmanship, and finally plated with 18ct gold.

Thetis is not just a piece of jewellery; it is an artefact of expression. The design of the bracelet allows it to embody the wearer's arm perfectly. It can be adapted and worn as an accessory to the wrist or the arm, according to the wearer's preference. The open design allows the wrist to slide in with just one move, adding to its practicality.

The Thetis bracelet project started in April 2015 in Shanghai and was completed in July 2015 in Rimini. It was featured in BAZAAR Jewelry, a testament to its design excellence. The design was awarded Silver in A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award in 2018, a prestigious accolade that recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs.

The creation of Thetis was not without challenges. The main challenge was to bring the fluid and intangible feeling of the ocean into the design of an actual object. Through careful observation of sea creatures and iterative design processes, Meng Zhang was able to overcome this challenge and create a piece of jewellery that not only enhances the body but also echoes the beauty of nature when worn.
