Alphabet Block Chatter is a unique pendant design that breathes life into the letters of the alphabet. The design, created by Yoko Kakuchi, takes inspiration from the vibrancy and color of life, a feature that is rarely found in accessories with alphabetical charms. The result is a collection of 26 distinct alphabet characters, each with its own unique charm and appeal.
The design process involved the use of CAD software, Rhinoceros 5.0, to create each charm. The wax patterns were then manufactured using Solidscape Max2. The pendants are available in 10 and 18 karat yellow gold, with the 10 karat gold option featuring green gold plating. The dimensions of each pendant vary, with the smallest being 2.8 x 6.5 x 2.6 mm and the largest 6.7 x 6.7 x 2.6 mm.
Yoko Kakuchi's design philosophy focuses on "playing with form". This is evident in the Alphabet Block Chatter, where each letter of the alphabet is transformed into a 3D character with vibrant and colorful properties. The design encourages wearers to appreciate the form of the alphabet, and the special meaning attached to each letter. This adds a new dimension to the way people perceive and interact with alphabetical jewelry.
The Alphabet Block Chatter was designed and created under Kakuchi's second collection theme of "digital and symbols". The project, which started in December 2015 and finished in February 2016, was carried out in Tokyo, where Kakuchi runs her own brand, MOMOKAMEI. The design process involved extensive research into the origin of the alphabet and various fonts, as well as observations of Kakuchi's twin daughters.
The Alphabet Block Chatter faced a major challenge in transforming 2D literal letters of the alphabet into 3D characters. However, the end result is a testament to Kakuchi's creativity and innovative approach to design. The Alphabet Block Chatter is not just a piece of jewelry, but a vibrant and colorful representation of the alphabet that fits well with the digital modern age.
The Alphabet Block Chatter was awarded the Golden A' Jewelry, Eyewear and Watch Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. They are venerated products and bright ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
