Michael McGirr's Award-Winning Design Merges Mid-Century Modernism with LA Luxe

The inspiration behind Highline was to create a venue that focuses on a minimal, mid-century modern retreat. The interior takes cues from the developed language of design to move against the trend of industrial chic/loft design, which has become the norm. Highline is an all-day dining, lounge, and bar that offers a refined and minimal creation, drawing inspiration from US mid-century modernism through an LA luxe filter.

The design of Highline is unique and different from others. The dark, low-ceilinged space was transformed into a sunlit skyroom, which forms a transition between the intimate dining room and the spectacular views from the terrace. The 600 square meter space was sub-divided into 400 square meters interior space with 100 square meters as a glass-enclosed extension included and an expansive 200 square meter roof terrace with an outdoor bar and storage.

The design was realized using materials from various sources, including Pergo wood floor, Belle Stone, Matzform furniture, Studio Illumine lighting design, Fybox lightbox, Kvadrat fabric, and Altfield fabric. The venue was spatially planned to highlight the key feature; the terrace. The central bar connects all three key spaces; The lounge, dining, and terrace zones while also providing a central focal point as you enter the space.

Highline was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
