Contrast of Materials

A Unique and Dramatic Residential House Design by Chih Chien Chen

People use vision and touch to feel space. To create a peaceful but dramatic space, Chih Chien Chen has designed a residential house that embraces the contrast of materials. By incorporating a combination of artificial and natural, reflective and matte, smooth and rough materials, the design showcases a unique and visually striking aesthetic. The bedroom door, kitchenware, and storage cabinets are cleverly hidden to create a more concise space.

This residential house design stands out due to its innovative use of materials. Chih Chien Chen has introduced lightweight and thin tiles as the surface of refrigerator doors and kitchen cabinets, seamlessly connecting the living room and dining room through material changes. The tiles also display cloth patterns, oil paintings, marbles, and gradients, adding depth and visual interest to the space. Additionally, the design features contrasting elements such as marble and rock, stainless steel and solid wood, and leather and metal. The elegant arcs created with lamps and ceilings further enhance the overall aesthetic.

The realization of this design involved the use of lightweight and thin tiles for the surface of refrigerator doors and kitchen cabinets. These tiles were combined with kitchenware and wood imported from abroad at different times, resulting in a harmonious blend of materials.

This single-floor mansion spans approximately 250 square meters and is located in Taipei, Taiwan. The project commenced in June 2018 and was completed in April 2019.

Chih Chien Chen, the designer and director of this project, faced several challenges during the creative process. Experimenting with various tiles with different surface textures was necessary to achieve the desired atmosphere in each space. The integration of tile materials in unique ways required careful consideration and planning.

The design of this residential house aims to create a more concise space. By maintaining the continuity of long side continuity surfaces and incorporating materials such as marble tiles, deep wood, and brown leather, the living room and kitchen island seamlessly transition into different spaces. The combination of artificial and natural, reflective and matte, smooth and rough materials adds depth and character to the overall design, resulting in a peaceful yet dramatic ambiance.

This design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2020. The award recognizes the outstanding creativity and ingenuity of the design, which authentically enhances the experience and resourcefulness of the space. Chih Chien Chen's design showcases strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life and making the world a better place.
