The uniqueness of Ocean One lies in its innovative use of glass as the main material for the exterior facade. This design choice visually breaks the boundary between the interior and exterior, offering a clear and unobstructed visual experience. The designers' approach to integrating indoor and outdoor landscapes is a key feature of this project. The use of rimless glass and large areas of glass curtain walls creates a visually seamless and permeable feeling, blurring the lines between the inside and outside of the room.
The project, which spans 600 square meters, retains the original structure and layer height of the building while remaking the outer skin. The design process paid special attention to the integration of indoor and landscape elements, resulting in a space that feels harmoniously connected to its surroundings. The indoor pool, connected to the outdoor landscape by a bridge, further enhances this sense of integration.
One of the key challenges faced during the design process was the extension of the pool into the interior of the building. This required the use of advanced techniques for waterproof treatment and water cycling systems. The designers also had to ensure that the interior, architecture, and landscape were integrated rather than separated, a departure from conventional practice which usually involves separate designs for each part.
The Ocean One project draws inspiration from the construction techniques of renowned architect Mies van der Rohe. Despite the small interior space, the use of wall split design technique and glass curtain walls expands the visual effect, creating a sense of spaciousness. The project was completed in 2017 and has since been exhibited in Shanghai, China.
The design excellence of Ocean One has been recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2018. The award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation, technical excellence, and artistic skill. Ocean One certainly fits this description, with its innovative approach to breaking down boundaries and integrating indoor and outdoor spaces.
