A Unique Blend of History and Contemporary Design

The Cat and Mouse Beer bar and Concept store, designed by studio 8 1/2, is a creative space located in the heart of Kapana, the new creative quarter in the city of Plovdiv, Bulgaria. This innovative design combines the old with the new, creating a modern space in a historical setting.

The Cat and Mouse Beer bar is situated in a 100-year-old, three-story house, typical of the craftsmen district that once thrived in this area. Despite its small front and minimal floor size, the bar manages to make a big impact. The ground floor, spanning just 40 sq.m, is transformed into a cozy and inviting space.

The interior design of the bar showcases the studio's philosophy of using natural elements and materials. Plywood and natural wood are used to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere, while non-painted steel elements, black walls, and exposed old brick walls add a touch of industrial charm. The use of steel as an accent material can be seen in the metal wires of the invisible parapet, the copper tubes running along the walls, and even the real traps used as decorative accents on the hanging lamps above the bar.

One of the unique features of the Cat and Mouse Beer bar is its connection to the past. The designers have preserved the original finishes of the walls and floors, integrating the existing historical layers into the modern design. This concept, known as "urban archaeology," brings the memory of the place to life and pays homage to the traditional crafts that once thrived in this district.

The bar also serves as a showroom for local craftsman furniture, allowing visitors to explore different materials and design experiences. The furniture, including chairs covered in original scribbles from schools, creates a contrast between the old and the new, further enhancing the bar's unique character.

The Cat and Mouse Beer bar and Concept store has become a symbol of the revitalization of the craftsmen district in Plovdiv. It seamlessly blends history and contemporary design, creating a space that is both inviting and inspiring. The project, completed in April 2015, has received recognition for its innovative approach and was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2016.
