Waveform: A Fluid Interpretation of Bookcase Design

Carmine Scotch's Award-Winning Creation Inspired by the Sea

Waveform, a series of modular metal bookcases, is a unique design by Carmine Scotch. Inspired by the undulating waves of the sea, this design hides its true function at first glance, revealing itself only when viewed from a particular angle. This article explores the inspiration, unique properties, and design process behind this innovative piece of furniture.

Waveform is a remarkable representation of the subtle movement of form in a curvilinear interpretation of motion. The design consists of three different units, each capable of standing alone as a single bookcase or combined in any configuration for larger spaces. The thin, elegant design consists of a series of metal blades that play off light and shadow, creating an intriguing visual effect.

The design's unique properties lie in its ability to disguise its function upon first glance. It is only when viewed perpendicularly that its true purpose as a bookcase is revealed. This clever design concept adds an element of surprise and intrigue, setting Waveform apart from traditional bookcases.

Waveform was brought to life using 3D imaging, computer-aided design, and laser-cut technology. Each unit is hand-finished and individually painted by experienced metal craftsmen in Italy, ensuring high-quality production. The units vary in shelf width, offering flexibility in configuration and composition.

The design project, originally a concept for an international design competition in 2015, was one of several designs selected out of 900 entries worldwide. The first prototype made its debut at MAISON & OBJET PARIS 2016 and became available to the general public in 2017. The project was based in Treviso, Italy.

Waveform's design process involved overcoming several challenges. The design criteria required a bookcase that could adorn an empty wall just like a picture, disguising its function of hosting books and small objects. The design had to be made out of iron or COR-TEN Steel, utilizing laser cutting technology and weighing no more than 40kg. Despite these constraints, Carmine Scotch successfully created a unique, functional, and aesthetically pleasing piece of furniture.

Waveform's innovative design and unique properties earned it the Silver A' Furniture Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
