Kazuaki Kawahara's Miyabi Monaka packaging design is a perfect example of innovation meeting tradition. The design, inspired by the aesthetics of a Japanese room, incorporates tatami motifs into individual packages. The package contains monaka wafers and sweet bean paste in separate bags, allowing consumers to assemble the sweet treat just before eating, thus ensuring freshness and a homemade feel. Realizing this design required a unique approach. The components are lined up next to each other rather than stacked, resulting in a 2 to 1 shape, reflecting the proportions of a tatami mat.
