Miyabi Monaka: A Packaging Design that Transforms into a Tea Room

Revolutionizing Packaging with Kazuaki Kawahara's Innovative Design

Discover how Kazuaki Kawahara's award-winning packaging design for Miyabi Monaka, a traditional Japanese wafer cake, not only serves its primary function but also transforms into a miniature representation of a Japanese tea room.

Kazuaki Kawahara's Miyabi Monaka packaging design is a perfect example of innovation meeting tradition. The design, inspired by the aesthetics of a Japanese room, incorporates tatami motifs into individual packages. The unique aspect of the design is its ability to transform into a representation of a traditional Japanese tea room, complete with a fireplace, when combined with other packages. This innovative approach allows for a variety of tea room sizes, from 2-mat to 18-mat, to be created.

The Miyabi Monaka packaging design is not just about aesthetics; it also enhances the product's functionality. The package contains monaka wafers and sweet bean paste in separate bags, allowing consumers to assemble the sweet treat just before eating, thus ensuring freshness and a homemade feel. This thoughtful design feature sets it apart from similar products in the market, where components are often stacked and tied together or placed inside boxes.

Realizing this design required a unique approach. The components are lined up next to each other rather than stacked, resulting in a 2 to 1 shape, reflecting the proportions of a tatami mat. This clever use of space and shape played a crucial role in creating the unique "tea room" concept. The individual packages are also designed with different motifs on the back, allowing them to be sold separately.

The project, which started in February 2017 and concluded in November 2017 in Japan, has been recognized for its creativity and innovation. The design was awarded Silver in the A' Packaging Design Award in 2018, a prestigious accolade given to designs that showcase outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. The award further highlights the design's strong technical characteristics and its ability to evoke positive feelings and amazement.

With its innovative design, Kazuaki Kawahara's Miyabi Monaka packaging not only serves its primary function but also offers a unique, interactive experience to the consumers. It is a testament to the potential of packaging design to transcend its traditional boundaries and become a medium of storytelling and interaction.
