Mod Makeup Academy: A State-of-the-Art Studio for Professional Makeup Training

Creating a Spiritual Ambiance for Excellence in Makeup Artistry

Inspired by the organic form of beauty from mother nature, Mod Makeup Academy, designed by Tony Lau Chi-Hoi and Kathy Lam Ka-Yi, is a state-of-the-art multi-functional studio that sets a new standard for professional makeup and styling training. With its unique design and innovative features, Mod Makeup Academy provides an optimal venue for aspiring makeup artists to nurture their skills and creativity.

Mod Makeup Academy draws inspiration from the simplicity and elegance of nature. The designers have incorporated elements like stone and solid wood massivholz to create a serene and Zen-like ambiance. The studio's design aims to remind users that skills, ingenuity, and artistry should only be required with a focused mind and a pure heart.

What sets Mod Makeup Academy apart is its focus on maximizing efficiency and adaptability. The studio incorporates SMART systems to optimize the utilization of space and energy. Custom-made interior settings and designer furniture grant high adaptability to the instant change of settings, allowing for seamless transitions between different makeup and styling setups.

The studio is equipped with state-of-the-art technology to enhance the teaching and learning experience. Changeable LED panels mimic different lighting conditions, providing makeup artists with a realistic environment to work with. Smart glass and mirrors embedded onto the walls serve as illustration boards and concept development tools. SMART systems are used to project demonstration and teaching materials, ensuring a comprehensive and interactive learning experience.

Mod Makeup Academy is tailor-made for professional makeup artists in training. The space strikes a balance between aesthetics and functionality, with geometric lines and shapes, pixels, light and shadow, and texture and materials manipulated to highlight the exquisite artistry of the makeup artists. The studio's layout, with a welcoming reception area, administration office, workshop and studio spaces, dressing rooms, and storage, emphasizes communication and connectivity between students and teaching staff.

The project, located at 19/F, Glory Centre, 8 Hillwood Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, Hong Kong, started in mid-2017 and was completed in September 2017. Throughout the design process, the designers conducted thorough research and interviews with the client to understand their needs for displaying various smart technologies, high-tech solutions, and products and services.

Despite the challenges of integrating numerous textures and materials into the space, the designers successfully achieved a striking visual balance. Lighting, colors, and textures were carefully considered to create a harmonious and visually appealing environment. The display of clients' products was also given great care, balancing aesthetics and commercial value.

Mod Makeup Academy has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Mod Makeup Academy stands as a testament to the designers' commitment to excellence and their contribution to the world of makeup artistry.
