TTMM: Revolutionizing Time Display on Fitbit

Albert Salamon's Award-Winning Interface Design for Fitbit

The inspiration for the TTMM collection stems from movies like 2001 Space Odyssey, Blade Runner, and Twin Peaks. The Tokyo Flash Japan portal, Nooka brand, and TTMM for Pebble collection also significantly influenced the design process. The result is a unique collection of clock faces that not only display time but also date, week day, heart rate, steps, activity time, distance, calories, floors, temperature in the user's city, and battery status. These features are customizable with a simple tap on the screen, making the interface user-friendly and efficient.

The TTMM clock faces were designed using Adobe Illustrator, with bitmaps edited in Adobe Photoshop. The programming was done with Fitbit SDK in Fitbit Studio software. The clock faces' code size ranges from 7Kb to 900Kb, demonstrating the efficiency of the design process. The project, which started in December 2017 and concluded in February 2018, was executed in Warsaw, Poland, with the programming done in France.

Albert Salamon's market observation and analysis revealed a lack of original thinking and design in the clock faces market. Most projects were imitations of mechanical clocks and 80's quartz LCD screens. This observation led to the experimentation and invention of a new design for the 21st-century era, balancing readability and inventiveness in time representation. The TTMM project, therefore, serves as a beacon of innovation in the digital time display space.

The main challenge in the design process was using fonts in the proper weight and scale to ensure readability and ease of setting complications. To save space for graphic icons or descriptions, Salamon used a unique symbols legend made from specific letters. For instance, "%" represents battery, "." represents steps, ":" represents heart rate, "*" represents calories, and "+" represents floors. Some models also feature useful extras like a torch or stopwatch and timer, making TTMM clock faces easy and fast to operate.

The TTMM collection, which won the Golden A' Interface, Interaction, and User Experience Design Award in 2018, is a testament to Albert Salamon's design prowess. The award recognizes marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom.
