David Collins' Innovative Design Enhances Functionality and Aesthetics

Everyday objects often go unnoticed, their design unchallenged. David Collins saw an opportunity in the overlooked bowl. Inspired by his wife's struggle to scoop soup one-handed while holding their toddler, Collins set out to improve the bowl's basic form and functionality. The result is The Channel Bowl, a design that enhances meal times and adds a touch of elegance to any table setting.

The Channel Bowl is a unique evolution of the everyday bowl. It is the first of its kind to feature an innovative center channel, enhancing both scooping and sipping. The high gloss interior provides a smooth surface, while the soft matte dimpled exterior ensures a better grip. The Channel Bowl stands out for its dual focus on function and aesthetic.

Creating The Channel Bowl was a complex process. The unique form required the use of ram pressing, the only ceramic production method that allows for a unique form on both the interior and exterior. The design had to account for various wall thicknesses within the bowl, especially the minimum wall thickness requirement. The pill-shaped logo portion on the base, for example, allowed the channel depth on the interior to be maximized.

The Channel Bowl was launched on Kickstarter and successfully funded beyond its goal in January 2018. It is currently being manufactured in Portland, Oregon and is available to order online. The design has received positive feedback from a wide range of consumers, from the elderly and disabled to mothers and children.

Despite the challenges faced during the design process, such as maintaining a proper wall thickness, the final product is a testament to Collins' dedication to design excellence.
