663 million people worldwide lack access to clean water, a staggering statistic that highlights the urgent need for innovative solutions. The Charity Water Well Sensor, designed by Intelligent Product Solutions, aims to address this global water crisis by providing real-time monitoring and reporting of well functionality.

The sensors embedded in remote wells measure the flow of clean water and record and report the efficiency of the charity: water wells at any given time, anywhere in the world. This cost-effective device is designed to function in extreme environments, where there are often significant swings in ambient temperature and a good amount of sedimentation in the water.

One of the unique features of the Charity Water Well Sensor is its ability to accurately determine if the well is covered with air or water, or a combination of both. This data is crucial in assessing the volume of water being pumped and ensuring the efficient operation of the well. The sensor's algorithm targets values for air and water for each pad, providing accurate and reliable information to water committees and donors.

Charity: water works closely with local experts and community members to find the best sustainable solution in each location where a well is installed. Water Committees are founded in each area, drawing from the local population and ensuring the long-term success of the project.

The design team at Intelligent Product Solutions faced several challenges during the development of the Charity Water Well Sensor. Wells are not always installed on a level plane or in the intended location, so a GPS sensor was added to facilitate easy location tracking. Additionally, the choice of technology was limited by cost and the presence of sediments or rust in the water, which could potentially lead to vandalism.

The Charity Water Well Sensor project started in 2016 in New York and was completed in May 2018. The team conducted extensive research and testing to ensure the efficiency and reliability of the sensor in extreme environments. The design has been recognized with the prestigious Iron A' Design Award in 2018, which celebrates well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.
