Layer Up: A Revolution in Salon Design

Exploring the Innovative Design of Jianwu Zhang and Tingbo Cai's Award-Winning Hairdressing Brand Store

Jianwu Zhang and Tingbo Cai were inspired by the urban feel of the city, utilizing a bright-yellow sculptural staircase as the focal point of the design. This staircase stands out against the black and dark grey walls, floors, ceilings, and functional furnishings, creating a sharp color contrast and an intense urban feel. The design is a perfect example of how the most basic structures can be used to create a visual focus.

The unique properties of Layer Up lie in its clever use of space. The space is vertically long and narrow, and the designers had to ensure functionality without making the space appear overly elongated. The location and direction of the stairs became the focus of the design, solving two problems at once. Through the transformation of the stairs and changing the route of space, the designers optimized the service process and efficiency of service personnel, enhancing the customer experience.

The realization of Layer Up was achieved using black paint coated board, yellow metallic paint, steel bars, 3mm Diamond Plate, polished concrete floor, and grey cement paint. Despite the limited space and budget, the designers managed to create a full-featured, visually stunning store space. The project started in May 2017 in Putian, China and finished in August 2017.

The design of Layer Up was driven by the concept of low cost, multi-functionality, and high recognition. The designers decided to optimize the design of the stairs to improve the space route and enhance the store's identification and visual impact in the simplest way of "color contrast". This approach perfectly solved the three issues of low cost, retaining all functionality, and enhancing store identification.

Layer Up is a testament to the innovative thinking of Jianwu Zhang and Tingbo Cai. The design is not only functional but also visually stunning, with the main visual staircase resembling well-organized and tidy bangs. The light shining on the steel pipe presents fantastic light and shadow, and each step in the staircase offers a different experience, perfectly expressing industry attributes.
