Redesigning Traditional Ceramic for Modern Lifestyles

Natural Growth is a collection of detachable, multifunctional ceramic plates that can be combined in various ways to suit individual preferences. Inspired by the need for versatility and functionality, Deng's design allows users to define the purpose of the plates during their use, making it an interactive and engaging product.

One of the unique features of Natural Growth is its ability to create value even when not in use. The rich functionality of the plates enables users to make the most of them, transforming them into ornaments or other functional products. This concept encourages users to think creatively and maximize the potential of their possessions, adding value to their everyday lives.

The combination of ceramic and wood was a crucial aspect of the design process. To ensure a perfect synthesis, Deng adopted a technique of sticks nailed firing, which prevents distortion after firing. Additionally, by leaving parts of the ceramic unglazed, the friction between the ceramic and wood is increased, providing stability and durability. The use of high-density beech as a pillar further enhances the stability of the design.

The dimensions of Natural Growth are 240mm in width, 240mm in depth, and 250mm in height, making it suitable for various uses and settings. The design team, consisting of Yangjing Deng, Chunlong Xiang, and Yingrui Liu, worked together to bring this innovative concept to life.

Through extensive research, including interviews, questionnaires, and observations, the design team identified the changing needs of the younger generation. They concluded that while the importance of functionality in household ceramics is diminishing, the demand for cultural experiences, quality, and spirit is increasing. This realization presented an opportunity for the traditional ceramic industry to redefine its products and cater to the evolving preferences of consumers.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was finding the right balance between traditional ceramic culture and modern lifestyle aesthetics. With Jingdezhen Ceramic's 1800-year history offering a plethora of elements to choose from, the designers had to ensure that the design met contemporary aesthetic standards while preserving the cultural essence of the ceramics.

Natural Growth has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving the quality of life.
