CORTINA: A New Wave in Kettle Design

Jungjoon Hwang's Award-Winning Convergence of Form and Function

In an era where design and innovation converge, Jungjoon Hwang introduces CORTINA, a kettle that embodies the cycle of water in its form. This article delves into the inspiration, unique properties, and the design process of this award-winning creation.

Designing a kettle might seem straightforward, but Jungjoon Hwang's CORTINA challenges this notion. Inspired by the convergence, circle, and cycle of water, Hwang has given form to these abstract concepts in a tangible, functional object. The spout and handle of the kettle merge into a circular form, symbolizing the endless cycle of water. However, viewed from the side, the form distorts, suggesting a design convergence rather than a literal one.

What sets CORTINA apart is its unique properties. Hwang explains, "There is no beginning, and no end. Water cycles." This philosophy is reflected in the kettle's design. The circular form of the handle alters the way water is used, depending on the angle at which it is poured. Despite its innovative design, the kettle functions just like any other, making it a practical yet stylish addition to any kitchen.

The kettle is made from 18/10 stainless steel, a material chosen for its ability to resist heat conduction up to the handle. In line with Hwang's commitment to environmental sustainability, rubber was deliberately avoided in the design process. The kettle measures 160mm in width and 215mm in height, making it compact and easy to handle.

The CORTINA project began in February 2011 in Korea and was completed in October of the same year. It was then exhibited at the Seoul Design Festival in November 2011. Throughout the design process, Hwang faced several challenges, including avoiding the use of rubber, which produces environmental hormones. However, he overcame these obstacles to create a design that is not only functional but also environmentally friendly.

CORTINA's innovative design has not gone unnoticed. In 2012, it was awarded the Golden A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design Award. This prestigious accolade is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.

In conclusion, Jungjoon Hwang's CORTINA is a testament to the power of design convergence. It challenges traditional concepts and offers a fresh perspective on the form and function of everyday objects. With its unique properties and award-winning design, CORTINA is set to make waves in the world of kitchenware design.
