Origami Shikki: A Fusion of Tradition and Innovation

Atsushi Morita's Award-Winning Lacquerware Paper Plate

Origami Shikki, a unique lacquerware paper plate designed by Atsushi Morita, combines traditional Japanese elements with modern design sensibilities. This innovative creation, which won the Silver A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design Award in 2023, reimagines tradition for a sustainable future.

Origami Shikki draws its inspiration from three traditional Japanese elements: origami, lacquer, and washi. Origami, the art of paper folding, lacquer, a centuries-old craft, and washi, a traditional paper with production sites all over Japan, are all integral parts of Japanese culture. Morita's design seeks to evolve these traditions into a sustainable form that integrates seamlessly into modern life.

The unique properties of Origami Shikki lie in its fusion of these traditional elements. By redesigning Japanese paper as lacquerware, Morita created an innovative expression of Japanese tradition. The design not only rethinks tradition but also considers a sustainable future for Japan's traditional industries.

The realization of Origami Shikki involved enhancing the water resistance and robustness of washi by applying a lacquer treatment. The use of a traditional Echizen technique known as HIKAKE, which allows the paper to change texture depending on the angle of the light, adds another layer of uniqueness to the design.

Origami Shikki is not only aesthetically pleasing but also highly functional. Its lacquer finish makes it durable against water and oil, and it can be used as a plate for all kinds of dishes. Lightweight and foldable, Origami Shikki can be carried anywhere, making it a perfect blend of beauty and utility.

Despite the challenges posed by the nature of lacquer, which cracks when force is applied after curing, Morita succeeded in folding the lacquer-coated Japanese paper like origami without cracking the coating. This achievement is a testament to the designer's innovative approach and commitment to preserving tradition while pushing boundaries.

Origami Shikki is a remarkable example of how design can bridge the gap between tradition and innovation. By reimagining traditional elements in a modern context, Atsushi Morita has created a design that is not only beautiful and functional but also sustainable and forward-thinking.
