Faceted Shell: Redefining Commercial Experience Centers

A Unique Approach to Design and Construction

Four surfaces (three walls and a ceiling) are mathematically sub-divided into triangles of varied sizes and angles through computational methods that allow optimization of material and construction time. CNC (Computer numerically controlled) milling is carried out on large slabs of Marble Stone to generate 3-dimensional surfaces clad on to surfaces at different angles. Each marble stone, as an individual triangle, is further subdivided to form smaller fractals leading to ridges and valleys.

The Faceted Shell, designed by Sushant Verma, is an innovative and visually stunning experience center located in Noida, Delhi NCR, India. This multi-functional space challenges the traditional concept of commercial display units by enveloping the inner surfaces with a unique surface treatment. The design is characterized by its mathematically sub-divided triangles, which optimize material usage and construction time.

Using computational methods, the four surfaces of the space are divided into triangles of various sizes and angles. These triangles are then CNC milled on large slabs of Indian White Marble, creating 3-dimensional surfaces that are clad onto the walls and ceiling at different angles. Each marble stone is further subdivided, forming smaller fractals that result in ridges and valleys.

One of the key strengths of the Faceted Shell is its point co-ordinate system, which allows for accurate construction on-site without the need for traditional working drawings. This system ensures precision and ease of construction, even with minimal labor skills. The recursive sub-division of the triangulated facets creates a visually striking pattern that filters light in an unprecedented way, illuminating the interior space.

The design process for the Faceted Shell was fully computational and parametric. The parametric model was mathematically designed using recursive subdivision of surfaces into triangulated facets. The subdivision of each surface was carefully controlled and optimized to fit material sizes and costs. This approach allowed for a mix of high-tech and low-tech systems, resulting in cost-effective and efficient project execution.

The Faceted Shell has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2018. This prestigious award acknowledges designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With its unique approach to design and construction, the Faceted Shell sets a new standard for commercial experience centers. Its visually striking and mathematically precise facets create a captivating space that showcases the potential of parametric and computational design.
