Niko Design Team's Award-Winning Innovation in Motion Detection

Unveiling the Flush Dali Sensor, an innovative ceiling mount motion and presence detector by Niko Design Team. This design, inspired by contemporary architectural luminaires, integrates seamlessly into public spaces and boasts a unique flat lens, easy installation, and remote programming capabilities.

The Flush Dali Sensor, a product of the Niko Design Team, is a testament to the team's commitment to creating products that are not only functional but also aesthetically pleasing. The sensor's design was inspired by contemporary architectural luminaires, making it a perfect fit for public spaces like schools and offices. The team's attention to detail is evident even in the backside of the sensor, a part usually only seen by the installer, which is designed in line with the Niko design language, making Niko products instantly recognisable.

What sets the Flush Dali Sensor apart from other motion detectors is its unique flat lens that integrates seamlessly into the ceiling. The sensor is easy to install, thanks to Niko's patent-pending mounting bracket system. Once installed, the sensor can be programmed remotely using an accompanying app on a smartphone, requiring only a Bluetooth connection. Unlike most existing motion detectors, the backside of a Niko sensor is designed with the same level of attention to detail as the frontside.

The sensor is made of polycarbonate plastics and fiber-reinforced polycarbonate plastics. The product does not require screws or glue for assembly, as all parts are assembled with snap fixtures, allowing for faster assembly times. The sensor uses Passive Infrared (PIR) technology, and several prototypes were tested with users to refine the design.

The Flush Dali Sensor measures 100mm in width, depth, and height. It has a sensor viewing distance of 10m at a mounting height of 2.5m and uses a Bluetooth wireless connection. The sensor is DALI compatible and can operate in temperatures ranging from -25°C to +50°C.

The design project, which started in April 2017 and was completed in March 2018, was carried out in Sint-Niklaas, Belgium, with the mechanics and industrial design team based at Niko headquarters. The hardware and software teams were located in Denmark. The team faced several design challenges, including designing a flat lens with a 10m viewing distance, integrating wireless Bluetooth connectivity, developing the mounting bracket, designing features for cable management, and maintaining a stylised and coherent industrial design while integrating technical features.

The Flush Dali Sensor's unique design and innovative features have not gone unnoticed. It was awarded the Golden A' Home Appliances Design Award in 2018, a testament to the team's remarkable creativity and wisdom. This award is granted to outstanding creations that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
