Vapour Bangalore: A Unique Dining Experience with Breathtaking Views

A Terrace Restaurant Designed by Devesh Pratyay

The inspiration behind the design of Vapour Bangalore comes from terrace spaces with open views. The entire layout of the restaurant has been carefully planned to maximize the views outside, ensuring that each table offers a glimpse of the city. The main hall of the restaurant has been constructed with a large height, creating a sense of spaciousness. Additionally, a new upper deck has been added to enhance the views and encourage guests to explore the different spaces within the property.

What sets Vapour Bangalore apart is its expansive terrace on the 15th floor, which not only provides a breathtaking view of the city but also offers a unique dining experience. The enclosed space, with its extensive terrace, creates a charming ambiance. The restaurant's design allows for the space to be subdivided into smaller areas, providing a sense of intimacy while maintaining a connection to the larger space. The terrace itself is designed to be semi-enclosed, allowing guests to enjoy the outdoors while still being protected from the elements. For those who prefer an air-conditioned area, full glass walls provide extensive views of the city.

The realization of this design is a result of careful selection of materials and technology. The flooring is done in vitrified tiles, while the walls are cladded with fly ash bricks, maintaining their natural texture and finished with a coat of lacquer for hygiene purposes. The ceiling is made of graphic boards hung from the true slab, which is left exposed with all services in its natural concrete finish. The structure of the restaurant is built using mild steel sections, with partition walls made of fly ash bricks. Extensive use of glass throughout the space creates a sense of openness and allows for uninterrupted views.

Vapour Bangalore spans a total area of 1250 square meters spread over two levels, including the terrace. The design team, led by Devesh Pratyay, also included Devesh Bhatia and Pratyay Chakrabarti, who contributed to the realization of this unique dining experience.

The interaction within the space is carefully designed to create a welcoming and comfortable atmosphere. The entry to the restaurant is through an entry foyer, leading to a double-height space that creates a sense of volume. The main feature in this double-height area is the bar counter, while the seating is arranged under the normal height area, providing a cozy dining experience. The staircase leading to the first floor levels is located in the double-height area and features a beam with sculptures of construction workers enjoying their lunch and beer. This area serves as a main attraction and is visible from the entry point.

Vapour Bangalore was a project that started in July 2017 and was completed in December 2018. Throughout the design process, the team conducted extensive research on minimalist design, as well as the design of large ballrooms and atriums in commercial and public buildings.

This unique design presented several challenges, one of which was maintaining the large volume created by the high ceiling while ensuring an airy and non-imposing atmosphere. The team successfully overcame these challenges, resulting in a space that combines functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Vapour Bangalore has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018 in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
