The GreenHouse: A Sustainable Oasis in Urban Chaos

Devesh Pratyay's Award-Winning Design Breathes Life into Urban Spaces

Amidst the rapid urbanization and dwindling green cover, the GreenHouse emerges as a breath of fresh air. This restaurant, designed by Devesh Pratyay, is a testament to sustainable design and innovation, offering a refreshing, natural setting for its guests. The GreenHouse, a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award winner, is a beacon of eco-friendly design in the heart of Gurgaon, India.

Pratyay's inspiration for the GreenHouse stemmed from the pressing need for natural spaces in urban areas. The design was conceived as a terrace garden, with plants adorning every corner. The small built-up area and large terrace were merged into a single, flowing space, blurring the boundaries between the indoors and outdoors. The use of eco-friendly materials, such as scrap packing wood, stone wastage, sun-dried clay bricks, and old fused bulbs, further underscore the project's commitment to sustainability.

The GreenHouse's unique properties lie in its innovative use of materials and space. All the metal sections and furniture used in the project were sourced from scrap, minimizing the consumption of new materials. The design's strength lies in its ability to create a natural, fresh atmosphere that extends to the food and beverages served, making it a unique experience for guests.

The realization of the GreenHouse was a meticulous process, with a focus on natural and waste materials. The walls were clad with waste stone cut into brick tile size and wood, while the outdoor area featured brick tile flooring. The terrace boasts an openable roof panel, closed only during the rainy season. Green wall systems and a drip irrigation system were installed to minimize water consumption for plants.

Spread over a total area of 400 sq.mt., the GreenHouse is divided into three interflowing areas. An entry foyer area, abundant with plants and trees, leads guests to either the indoor or outdoor area. The toilets are strategically placed at the end of the space, encouraging guests to explore the entire restaurant. The design's interaction with its guests is a testament to Pratyay's thoughtful planning and execution.

The GreenHouse project, started in October 2017 and completed in December 2017, was a result of extensive research into indoor and outdoor flora and fauna. The selection of plants that produce oxygen most of the time and absorb harmful pollutants from the air was a conscious choice, reflecting the designer's commitment to creating a healthy and natural environment. Overcoming the creative challenge of combining two spaces into one and subdividing it into smaller pockets for privacy without creating visual partitions was a significant achievement for the design team.

In conclusion, the GreenHouse is a remarkable example of sustainable design and innovation. It is a testament to Devesh Pratyay's vision and commitment to creating natural spaces in urban areas. The GreenHouse is not just a restaurant; it is a step towards a greener, healthier future.
