Kashan: A Fusion of Tradition and Contemporary Design

Respecting History and Embracing Sustainability in a Hotel Project

The location of the hotel project is in Kashan, a historic city in Iran, where the goal is to consider the tradition, history, economy, ecology, and culture of the people. The design team, led by Mahdi Fakhimi, believes in a sustainable approach to architectural design, incorporating ecological and sustainable elements from the beginning.

Kashan city experiences a dry and hot climate, and to address this, the design team has implemented various shading techniques such as window sunshades, porous walls, plants, and porches to protect the building from glare. Taking inspiration from the historical places in the city, the design also features porches, open spaces, and courtyards.

The exterior material predominantly used in this project is concrete, which not only provides protection from the hot summers but also allows for easy cutting in the window sunshades. The turquoise and green colors of the plants help reduce the overall whiteness of the space, creating a visually pleasing environment.

This hotel project spans over 20,357 square meters, with 10,708 square meters currently under construction. The design team, consisting of Mahdi Fakhimi, Maryam Fallah, Forouz Asghari, Hadis Jaafari, and Zahra Soltani, has worked diligently to create a design that harmonizes with the surroundings and offers a unique experience for guests.

The design of Kashan hotel incorporates central courtyards, creating empty volumes within the cube-like structure. The spaces are separated by frames, and retreating and porous walls, along with porches and shaded areas with plants, help to reduce sunlight. The choice of bright colors for the walls also contributes to heat absorption.

The project started in September 2017 and is expected to be completed by November 2017. Extensive research was conducted on the region's climate and traditional architecture to ensure user comfort. The design decision was made based on the client's requirements and budget, providing a desirable space for users to connect with while showcasing contemporary architecture in the area.

The design team faced challenges such as providing external access to different parts of the hotel and accommodating the employer's needs within the given land dimensions. Additionally, careful consideration was given to selecting the proper facade and materials to optimize cost-effectiveness.

Kashan hotel's architectural design is a fusion of traditional and contemporary elements. It pays homage to the region's cultural and historical roots while incorporating climate considerations, structural integrity, and contemporary aesthetics. By adhering to the principles and values of traditional Iranian architecture, the design by Mahdi Fakhimi and his team showcases the profound concepts and rich cultural content of the land.
