Spice Chakra Indian Recipe Pack

Packaging to display spice ingredients

India's culture is one of the oldest & richest in the world, to reflect this, Mark Turner created a range of packs that borrowed from the diverse and varied colors of the different regions of India. Rich oranges for the Regal Collection of recipe packs, cool blues for the Hill Station Collection, and fresh greens for the Chakra Thali Collection. The Chakra wheel symbolizes the whole well-being of the body which is fed by good authentic food.

The Spice Chakra Indian Recipe Pack, designed by Mark Turner, stands out with its unique approach to packaging. The main objective was to create packaging that would allow consumers to view the spices in the pack, see the final recipe, and show the "shopping list" with the additional items needed to make the recipes. The inside of the pack contains step-by-step instructions to create the meal.

The packs were printed onto card and sealed with a matte lamination, giving them a sophisticated and tactile feel. To enhance the visual appeal, spot gloss varnish was used to highlight the logo, recipe image, "Chakra" wheel, and shopping list. This combination of textures and finishes adds depth and interest to the packaging, making it stand out on the shelf.

Color played a crucial role in this design. Symbiotic tones were used to differentiate the three regional collections: rich oranges for the Regal Collection, calming blues for the Hill Station Collection, and fresh greens for the Chakra Thali Collection. These colors were inspired by the vibrant and diverse culture of India, adding an extra layer of authenticity to the packaging.

The Spice Chakra Indian Recipe Pack is a folded card pack with spices and ingredients held together by a black matte metal rivet. When the pack is opened, the directions are printed on the inside of the foldout card, providing a seamless and user-friendly experience.

The project started in January 2017 and was completed in April 2017. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to ensure that the colors and design elements accurately represented the regions and flavors of India. Mood boards and insights from the client's travels in India were used to inspire and guide the design.

The challenge of this project was to portray the authentic nature of these recipe packs. The recipes featured in the Spice Chakra Indian Recipe Pack are traditional meals of India, and it was important to convey to consumers that they were buying a little piece of the "real" Indian culture. Through careful attention to detail and thoughtful design choices, Mark Turner successfully captured the essence of Indian cuisine and culture in this packaging.

The Spice Chakra Indian Recipe Pack has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2018, which is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This award acknowledges the integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, contributing to a better world.
