Cristina Dan's Award-Winning Design Combats Fast Fashion with Sustainable Innovation

Fast fashion, characterized by rapid production and disposal, is the second most polluting industry globally. Each year, 53 million tons of clothing are produced, with a staggering 87% ending up in landfills. This waste emits harmful methane, a potent greenhouse gas, threatening future generations' quality of life. Cristina Dan's Omdanne collection emerges as a beacon of hope in this bleak scenario, offering a sustainable and stylish alternative.

Omdanne is a unique collection comprising three clothing pieces that can each transform into over ten different styles. These multifunctional designs discourage excessive consumption, as one piece can serve as jumpsuits, dresses, blouses, capes, jackets, trousers, or boleros. More impressively, all three pieces are 100% compostable, turning into soil nutrients instead of polluting textile waste. This innovative approach leverages natural, renewable resources and product life cycle traceability to ensure a clean, closed-loop fashion system.

The garments are made from 100% Tencel Lyocell fiber, an OEKO-TEX 100 certified material. The collection also features detachable block powerful magnets, which not only allow safe composting at the end of the clothes' life cycle but also offer endless style options. The garments are 100% biodegradable, showing intense signs of bio-degradation in standard soil after just four weeks, with full decomposition occurring in 8 to 9 weeks.

Each Omdanne piece can be transformed into over ten styles, fixed in place with detachable magnets. The garments are machine washable at 30 degrees, and at the end of their use, they can be composted or buried in soil. This user-friendly design, coupled with its eco-friendly features, makes Omdanne a trailblazer in sustainable fashion.

The design and implementation process, which took place in Herning, Denmark, lasted 1.5 years. The collection was exhibited in "Future of Fashion & Technology" in September 2018 at the MAS Museum in Antwerp. The project faced significant challenges, including designing versatile clothing pieces and ensuring the fabric's safety for composting. Despite these hurdles, the result is a multifunctional, compostable capsule collection that sets a new standard for sustainable fashion.

For its innovative approach to sustainable fashion, Omdanne was awarded Silver in A' Sustainable Products, Projects and Green Design Award in 2019.
