Tea House: A VIP Lounge with Oriental Charm

Renowned Designer Jen-Chuan Chang Creates a Unique Vintage Style Tea Place

The Tea House, designed by Jen-Chuan Chang, stands out with its unique and nostalgic style. The renovation process involved using old bricks and tiles from the original building as new decorative elements, transforming the space into a renewal of memories. The combination of diffuse light, the scent of tea, and the texture of cement walls creates a unique Oriental charm, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in a comfortable and relaxing experience. The use of recycled window frames and wooden building materials adds a sense of cultural history and breathes new life into the old building.

The Tea House is realized using concrete, reclaimed wood, black iron plates, tiles, and bricks. With a total area of 105 square meters, the design maximizes the use of space and creates a harmonious flow between different areas. The original enclosed space is transformed into a series of interconnected spaces through a well-planned circulation arrangement. This allows for the fulfillment of various functions while extending the visual scale to the outdoors.

The Tea House is located in Hsinchu City, Taiwan, and the project took place from February 2014 to February 2017. The design process involved retaining the original building's construction methods, such as wooden beams and bricks. The incorporation of old window frames and wooden materials adds a sense of cultural history and revitalizes the building.

One of the main challenges faced during the design process was introducing light without compromising the structure of the narrow original building. The solution was to install glass windows under the eaves, allowing direct sunlight to enter the space. Additionally, the Tea House features a unique seat and furniture design that goes beyond traditional spaces, adding a touch of modernity and creativity.

The Tea House, designed by Jen-Chuan Chang, has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category in 2019. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
